Cougars fight back, but Fall Short
The Colehamer Cougars faced their first defeat of the season
against the Poestenkill Bums. Matt Fischer threw aspirin tablets to
Cougars hitters, striking out massive numbers of people. Scott
Fitzpatrick, Cougars pitcher, was on his game as well, creating a
pitchers duel at Triscari Field.
Early on, the PoeBums clicked and scored runs. They took the
pressure of the packed house at Triscari Field, put it aside, and
played their game. When the Bums play hard, they are a tough team
to beat. And they did. Matt Fischer pitched superb. Runs were put
together by mainly Nick Hendrickson and Nick Haggerty, despite a few
from Mike Hendrickson. The Cougars soon found themselves down by a
score of 7-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Two out, bases
loaded. Matt Fischer stutters with his control for a pitch, and
plunks Mike Triscari to bring in a run. The ghosts were coming
out. The crowd was against them. Everybody saw what was coming
next. Mark Fitzpatrick lifted the first pitch up and over the newly
redone screen monster. Game tied. Now it was a new game again.
But the Bums showed no signs of giving up with the momentum shifted
in the Cougars favor. Nick Haggerty led off the top of the ninth
with a single. He eventually came around to score the go ahead
run. In the Cougars frame, the first two outs were recorded with
ease. Mike Triscari was intentionally walked and Mark Fitzpatrick
came to bat. Ball one. Ball two. Strike one. Strike two. A
close call on strike three kept the game alive. But a foul tip into
the backboard would end it for the Cougars.
It was a hard fought pitchers duel in which the Bums came out on
top. The rubber game will be next weekend. -4/29
