Cougars Open Spring Training with a Bang,
Triscari Pleased with Dowd’s Performance
The Kyle
Brown era is over. It’s time to move on for the Colehamer Cougars. In
a game that held temperatures at 21 degrees, Cougar ace, Scott
Fitzpatrick was as hot as ever. He went 8.0 innings, racked up 7
strikeouts, and only gave up a mere 4 runs. He seemed as if he were
unhittable up until the eighth inning, where he gave up 3 of his four
runs in the Cougars 17-4 victory over the Poestenkill Bums.
The Cougars
showed early that they would play great defense this year, as newcomer,
Connor Dowd, debuted with an excellent performance in the field. When
the Cougars signed Dowd to their team, they expected great defense, and
were looking for it. The Fitzpatrick brothers and Mike Triscari produce
enough power and runs as it is (combined, they scored 16) and they need
better defense, so Dowd really helped this team out.
When the
Cougars came up to bat for the first time, they showed pop. Scraping
three runs together, Mark Fitzpatrick stepped up to the plate. He went
back to the old way of doing things, sparking the Cougars, and crushing
a grand slam. It was one of those homers where you knew it was gone the
second it left the bat. Seven first inning runs. Soon though, the
weather caught up with the Colehamer offense, as their bats went cold,
taking a 9-1 lead into the eighth inning. A couple of bad calls later,
the Cougars went into the bottom half with almost a game. Again, the
Cougars jumped awake, as Mike Hendrickson failed to hit his spots, soon
leading to disaster for the Bums. Scott Fitzpatrick unloaded on a one
out, grand salami into the upper deck, maxing out the run limit for the
Cougars. But the fun wasn’t over yet. With one out in the ninth, Mike
Hendrickson popped up. Matt Fischer fled from first to second. Closer,
Mike Triscari laid out for a ball that wound up being a web gem, and a
game ending double play.
Winter
break is coming quickly, and the Cougars will stay active, and continue
playing more wiffleball to prepare for their 2006 campaign!
